The summer season is slowly approaching, and it is also the most popular time of the year for traveling. You may have already booked your hotel room and planned the itinerary for the entire trip. However, you may not be prepared for what is under the sheets. Bed bugs infect the beds of even the most respectable hotels. They are very common and many tourists do not realize that their bed is infected.
You will first notice bed bugs when you have a strong itching sensation. You will see the itch before you see any rashes. The bites given by bed bugs will usually itch much more worse than a mosquito bite. Bed bugs bite you when you are sleeping and you will not feel it due to the saliva produced by the bug. The saliva dulls the pain.
When you are packing for your trip, make sure to bring along a water-based insect repellent. This will act as a “bed bug spray”. Once you arrive in your hotel room, smell and see if there is an odd musty or sweet smell in the room. This is usually a sign of bed bugs. The smell is most strong around the headboards of the bed, under furniture, or under the bed. If you smell this when entering the room, it might be best to get a new room. Spray the bed with the bug spray and any other area you see fit.
Before returning home, it is important that you do not bring the bed bugs with you. Shake out all of your clothing to get rid of any bugs that might be hiding within them. You should also put your clothing in the bathtub overnight. Bed bugs do not like to be in places where there is water. As an added precaution, wash your clothes in hot water before repacking. You should also spray your suitcase completely, inside and out, with the bug spray.
Bed bugs are a lot like lice, they are very hard to get rid of. It is important that you do not bring the bugs home with you. If you do bring them home, it is likely that you will need pest control in order to eliminate them. The worst case scenario is that you will have to replace your mattresses and furniture.
