What are bed bugs?

Adult bed bugs are brown to reddish-brown, oval-shaped, flattened, and about 3/16 to 1/5 inch long. Their flat shape enables them to readily hide in cracks and crevices. The body becomes more elongate, swollen, and dark red after a blood meal. Bed bugs have a beaklike piercing-sucking mouthpart system. The adults have small, stubby, nonfunctional wing pads. Newly hatched nymphs are nearly colorless, becoming brownish as they mature. Nymphs have the general appearance of adults. Eggs are white and about 1/32 inch long.

Bed bugs superficially resemble a number of closely related insects (family Cimicidae), such as bat bugs (Cimex adjunctus), chimney swift bugs (Cimexopsis spp.), and swallow bugs (Oeciacus spp.). A microscope is needed to examine the insect for distinguishing characteristics, which often requires the skills of an entomologist.

Where are bed bugs found?

Bedbugs are very flat, which allows them to hide in tiny crevices. A crack wide enough to fit the edge of a credit card can harbor bedbugs [even in the ceiling]. In the daytime, they tend to stay out of the light, preferring to remain hidden in such places as mattress seams, mattress interiors, bed frames, nearby furniture, carpeting, baseboards, inner walls, tiny wood holes, or bedroom clutter. Bedbugs can settle in the open weave of linen; this will often appear as a gray spindle a centimeter long and a thread wide, with a dark speck in the middle.

Can bed bugs harm humans?

Bedbugs have no wings and cannot fly. They are light to dark brown and up to 1/3 inch. They look a little like small ticks but have only six legs (ticks have eight). Bedbugs bite mainly at night. They feed on animal blood and the common bedbug prefers humans, but will also feed on dogs and cats and other warm-blooded animals. Some people do not notice the bites, but other people become allergic and the bites can be itchy and cause much misery and lost sleep. Bites can become infected, but bedbugs are not thought to carry disease.

How do I know if my home is infested with bed bugs?

A bed bug infestation can be recognized by bloodstains from crushed bugs or by rusty (sometimes dark) spots of excrement on sheets and mattresses, bedclothes, and walls. Fecal spots, eggshells, and shed skins may be found in the vicinity of their hiding places. An offensive, sweet, musty odor from their scent glands may be detected when bed bug infestations are severe.

How are bed bugs eradicated in the home?

While professional pest control companies are usually very efficient in eliminating bed bugs, they are very expensive and in most cases have to come to your home more than once. A cheaper yet still effective method of treating and eliminating these pests can usually be found in consumer bed bug sprays or home treatments. Using a bed bug spray and following the steps below will typically be just as effective as a professional but much more cost effective.

Bed bugs infested bedding materials and cloths will need to be thoroughly cleaned. Take them to a laundry mat if you don’t want to bedbugs in your washer and dryer. But never use insecticides on materials that would come in contact with your body. Also, if you have pets, be sure to understand the possible affects chemicals may have on them.

A thorough vacuuming effectively removes both bed bugs and their eggs from mattresses, walls, and carpeting. Special attention should be given to creases and crevices. Be sure to get rid of the vacuum bag/contents in a sealed garbage bag. A professional hot water carpet extraction is also recommended if possible.

During the warmer seasons you will notice that the bug population becomes much larger. Not only does it become larger, but it also becomes more apparent and annoying. Bugs that will eat your home and bite you are more than just a simple problem. They are a big problem that must be kept under control. Using chemicals to rid your home of pests could create quite a health problem for the human inhabitants of the house. They smell horrible and when they are breathed in they can cause respiratory problems.

One way to rid your home of insects and not cause yourself any health problems is the use of a bug blocker. These simple solutions have increased in popularity as people become more aware of the dangers of chemical pesticides. There are many bug blocker types to choose from if you decide to use one of these methods to eliminate bugs in your home. A window shield is one type of bug blocker that can work very well to keep the bugs from invading your home. They are ventilated to allow the air in your home to circulate and keep the bugs out at the same time.

Wire mesh that is installed over your doors and windows is another method that can be used to keep the insects out. Windows and doors are the primary ways that bugs enter our homes. They are simple to install and are very effective at stopping bugs before they get into the home.

Do some homework and comparison-shopping before you decide on the type of insect control device you are going to use in your home. You will have to consider the insect type that you are trying to eliminate and whether or not you have pets and small children in the home. There are devices that are very effective at ridding the home of mosquitoes and others that are good for a host of pests that could be running around your home, from cockroaches to mice.

The electronic devices that are used to rid a home of pests are very friendly to the environment and will not hurt any human inhabitants in your home. Some of them can be quite expensive and you should do some shopping around before you buy one. There are lower cost alternatives to the expensive devices that do just as effective of a job. The difference in the devices is the amount of time they take to work.

If you are having a difficult time with the insect population in your home you should go online and do some shopping for electronic pest control devices. You should be able to find various sites that have these devices for sale and at a very reasonable price. You can compare prices among the different sites and find the best price for the device that you want. You can usually order the device online and have it delivered to your home. It’s a great way to go shopping.

Termites are one problem in the home that must be dealt with right away. At the first sign of termite damage you should begin looking for an effective way to get these insects out of your home before they cause more problems. You can usually find an effective poison for termites that can be used in and outside of your home. It is helpful to put the poison around your home so that you can keep them from getting in.

Unless you enjoy eating them, termites are unlikely to be a welcome visitor in your home. A better term than “visitor” might be “invader.” Actually, since, like all parasites, the termites infesting your home will flourish at your expense if you allow them to do so, a better term than “invader” might be “parasite.” This is because the termite does not merely seek shelter from your home. It also seeks sustenance. Termite invaders seek to eat your home from the inside out. And they are not honest about it. Usually they busy themselves with the work of turning the wood construction of your home into insect feces in the privacy and anonymity of the wood itself; inside your walls, ceilings, and floors. They are therefore a pest which is likely to be hidden from view, and consequently the damage they can do before being detected is considerable. In other words, to prevent a termite infestation, it is not enough to wait until the infestation becomes apparent. It is essential to know the risk factors and the mechanics of termite infestation before that happens so that you will know whether you need to be worried about termites, and so that, if needed, you can practice some preemptive termite control.

Whether termites see your home as tasty depends primarily on two factors. The first is the material construction of your house, and the second is the treatment of that construction. Since termites eat wood, houses primarily composed of brick, metal, or plastics are obviously not at risk of termite infestation, though if they also contain wood, those parts of them may still be vulnerable to infestation and require termite control. However, most houses these days are composed out of wood and are therefore potential candidates for termite infestation. In case your home is made out of wood, knowing the variety of wood used is important, as termites prefer certain kinds of wood to others. The variety of wood in your house has a considerable impact on your chances of infestation. Likewise, the age of the house is important. The older a house is, the more opportunities there have been for infestation. For older houses, conscientious termite control is particularly important, as their wood is more subject to potential weakness and decay than is the wood of newer homes.

If, in light of what has said thus far, your home appears vulnerable to infestation, then there are treatments that can be applied to the wood to decrease the likelihood that an infestation will occur. Glosses, lacquers and other chemical treatments can render wood impenetrable and/or inedible for the termites, acting as a sort of moat around the perimeter of each plank. Another available sort of treatment comes from termite control professionals like Terminix who can further protect the wood in your house using chemicals specifically designed to safely kill and repel termites.

Because termite infestations are often insidiously hidden, and because they can have such grave consequences for the integrity and value of your home, they call for professional appraisal and intervention above and beyond other pest infestations. Terminix will inspect your home at no cost to you, and treatment options are effective and affordable. With professional help, termite control is easy. You just have to seek it in time. Let Terminix ease your mind and protect your most important financial investment.

Part of owning your pets besides playing with them or feeding them and giving them a good home is responsible pet care. Pets are part of your life and look to you to protect them from pests. Keeping them free of Fleas and Ticks is a major component of that care.

In order to provide this care learning about the products and which ones will provide the safest and most efficient form of protection is the first step. Let’s take a look and see what the best steps to take are during this process.

With so many brands now available on the marketplace today the choices are far reaching. Add to that the number of breeds and your particular pet most of all. Remember, every pet isn’t the same so even using a completely safe product may not work on your dog or cat or may be harmful to them.

Pets like any other animal may react adversely to a treatment that 99 out 100 others may be fine with. Because of their own chemistry and the complex chemistry of the product, the two may not mesh.

Lets take a look at the list of what to watch for when starting a good program of Flea and Tick Control.

Read the label. Making assumptions about what you are buying because of a company’s reputation, what you read or someone told you doesn’t cut it. Don’t cheap out on the treatments. You’ll get what you pay for. Responsible companies test their products for safety. Don’t ever use a product that is for your dog interchangeably on your cat. This can cause them serious problems. See if the products contain chemicals that might harm other pets or children. This doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t use them. It means you may need to implement other safeguards when you do. Keep these products locked up when they are in the house. Don’t overuse the treatments on the pets. More doesn’t mean better and instead of helping your pet you are probably hurting them. Watch your other pets for signs of sickness. A flea collar protecting one animal for example might be a detriment to another. If you only have one pet in the house look for any possible signs of poisoning while using the products. This may include, throwing up, excessive drool, shaking or even irritations on the surface of the pets skin. Remember to treat the sleeping and playing areas of the pets as well. An effective Flea and Tick Control Program doesn’t only concentrate on the pet but all of their surroundings as well. Try using products that contain IGR’s (Insect growth regulators) and adulticides. This helps insure the treatment will provide protection against a reoccurrence on the pets thru the Fleas or Ticks whole life cycle. Talk to your veterinarian. Let them know that you want to start a program of Flea and Tick Control for your pet(s). They’ll have the pet’s history and can recommend what will be right for them.

Taking care of our pets shouldn’t be a chore for us. An ounce of prevention while setting up a good program of Flea and Tick Control is well worth the effort. You’ll be happy in the long run and definitely, so will your pets.

Thanks for reading.

See you again soon.

In this final article in the series of Universal Lawn Care Tips, Weeds | Pests | Diseases discusses the invaders who want to take over our lawns and establish themselves in it’s place, the article concludes to reveal that the best defence is a great offence, read on to reveal all.

If there is one universal truth in growing and maintaining a lawn, it’s that we will always have to deal with unwanted invaders onto our carpets of green. Invaders whose single purpose is to take over our lawn, destroy it, and establish itself in our lawns place. These invaders are weeds, pests and diseases, and why wouldn’t they want to live here, it’s an environment which is cared for and has plenty of nutrients and water. It’s our job as lawn owners to battle these invaders and win, it may sound difficult but in reality it is not, it’s just a normal part of our easy lawn care regime we use to maintain our lawns.

Another of the universal truths in lawn care is that “A healthy lawn is the best defence against weeds, pests and diseases”. A healthy lawn has a deep root system, is well nourished, is thick and lush, and strong.

These characteristics reduce the possibility of weed seeds to establish inside a lawn, and if they do establish then it is very difficult for the weed to out-compete the healthy lawn for either root space or space to grow within the thick lawn matting. On rare occasions that a weed takes hold and does establish, the healthy lawn can easily outgrow and out-compete, and smother the unwanted weed.

The same principles apply to invading pests like ants and others, which require worn out turf areas in order to establish and flourish .

Diseases are usually the same, they love lawns which are already weakened, and thrive without resistance in their quest to spread into and destroy our lovely sod.

You see, all three of these invaders flourish under the same environments, using the same principles of establishment and domination. They seek out a weak host (your lawn) and establish themselves. Once established, they quickly get to work growing and spreading as fast as possible. Their only aim is to take over our lawns, and fast.

It’s easy to see the principle at work here, a weakened lawn invites invasion, and it’s just as easy to see the solution to the problem is a healthy lawn in peak condition.

There are many different types of cures available for each problem our lawns face, whether it is Spring Dead Spot, Army Worm, or Wintergrass. All solutions usually require applications of one type of chemical or another, or in the case of multiple problems we may need to apply many different types of chemicals to aid in ridding our lawns of these lawn invaders. The trouble with these types of defences are their impact on the environment, and in today’s ever growing awareness of the importance of taking care of our environment, it’s just no longer acceptable to use chemicals unnecessarily and unrestrained.

The solution and the best defence against all these sod invaders is and always will be the best offence- “Prevention” and “Good Lawn Health” and “Good Lawn Care”. Keep following these few simple lawn care practices for a great lush green lawn which will ward off all invaders before they can take a foothold.

Thank you for taking the time to read this series of the essential Universal Lawn Care Tips, as the name suggests – they were designed to be universal, to be used in any environment, on any grass variety, and in any region of the world. These are the Universal Lawn Care Tips, and if practised properly and routinely, these tips will ensure a lush green carpet of turf that will be the envy of neighbours, no matter where you live.

House plants can be beautiful, but they may also be affected by things that you are not even aware of. Having a few house plant insects is just annoying, but with to many bugs, your house plants will be destroyed in record time.

There are problems that certain plants can get hit hard with. You have no idea how many times house plants are infected by bugs, pests and insects, and people do not even realize that these mites are actually in the house.

When you purchase your house plants, take the time to make sure that they do not have an insect infestation of one sort or another. Again, when you bring your summer plants into your home for the winter, check for bugs. Sometimes this may be tricky as the bugs will borrow their way into the soil, but you will want to make certain that there is no evidence of a present infestation. By simply taking a few precautions, you will considerably reduce the chances of insects attacking your plants.

Insects will also enter your home because people carry them in. This is nearly impossible to prevent as the insects will attach themselves to cloths or come in through an open door or window. A time to watch out for bugs is when the weather is starting to warm up and again when the weather is cooling down. The insects like to come into the homes for shelter.

Plant insects can easily be controlled because it is on such a small scale. The insects or bugs are much more mobile when they are young, but the are always looking for a place to settle where they wont be disturbed. If fact, this is why your house plants can be bothered with insects. The solution to this problem is a general insecticide.

One type of bug that will bother your house plants are aphids. They have a soft body and can be easily controlled with pesticides and insecticide soaps. Other bugs most often encountered include mealy bugs, mites, scale, thrips, whiteflies and various other soil insects. Tiny spiders can also be another problem.

The typical cause of damage caused by the individual bugs includes: Aphids suck the sap out of plants; Mealy Bugs suck the sap out and plants, leaves a cotton-like substance on the plants and also leaves a honey dew substance which attracts ants; Mites suck the sap out of plants; Scale suck the sap out of plants and leaves a sticky honey dew substance that attracts ants and causes fungus growth; Thrips rip and tears foliage and blisters develop where the eggs are laid; Whiteflies cluster on the back of leaves and suck the sap out of the leaves, which turn yellow and die.

Try to avoid adding organic material into your soils. It is not necessary to add fertilizer because the topsoil will have enough nutrients for the plants. You will also want to remove any fallen flowers and leaves, as this would allow moulds and fungus to grow into the soil.

Most of the time there are infestations when the soil has a high organic content because of fungus, gnats, or springtails. If your plant has a fungus or bugs like gnats, you will generally find that your plant is actually decomposing, meaning, it is rotting.

Signs of attacks on your house plants by insects can include leaves turning a yellow or brown colour, plants starting to wilt and stop growing, jagged holes starting to appear in the foliage or a honey dew type substance smeared on the plants.

If you do notice that your house plants are infected with bugs or disease, you will need to take appropriate measures to eliminate the problem. You can consult your local garden nursery for advice or you may want to purchase a pesticide that will not hurt your plants, but will be a solution to your problems. Be sure to use the right product for the insects you have, as some pesticides can actually kill certain house plants. When using any pesticides always make sure to read and follow the warnings that the manufactures puts on the label.

Just remember to examine your house plants every now and then, do not wait for them to start looking sad. By giving the proper feeding, care and fresh air will ensure that you house plants remain healthy and more resistant to insect problems. As always, if you are able to find any problems with insects early enough, it can often be taken care of without the use of pesticides and that is, by far, the best way.

The question of whether pets are good for you or not is an eternal debate that has raged for many years. The obvious benefit of animals and pets are very easy to see. Even in ancient times, man would gather dogs and domesticate them to protect families from wild animals and provide an early warning against predators. Dogs were originally domesticated to assist in hunting, but as time went by they became more of a domesticated animal serving mainly the purpose of company and friendship for mankind. In this role, dogs served mankind as defender, friend and companion throughout the years.
Cats were utilized at many points throughout history in the attempt to rid cities of the world of rats and other rodent infestations. This impact on mankind by animals was slow but surely becoming a symbiotic type relationship, where the pets would serve a function that was useful to the owner. Dogs served as guardians, cats served as pest control and other animals served their purpose. This absolute functionality of pets leads to the question of how good for your health is it to actually keep pets?
Doctors have speculated for years that pets keep their owners in high spirits simply by virtue of being there. Your pets are rarely unhappy or sad and can lift the mood of the user, keeping their spirits high. This elevated mood can lead to extended healthy life and feelings of positive reinforcement and happy emotions. This positive effect on the owner is often cited as a reason for users to keep pets as a way to improve their overall health and disposition. There are many positive health effects from owning pets and caring for them on a regular basis.
People with dogs who spend time walking or otherwise interacting with their dogs, generally lose weight or are considered to be effectively exercising in the day-to-day routine of walking and caring for the animals. This focus on fitness by walking dogs and generally interacting and playing with your animals on a regular basis can lead to extended good health throughout your life and it is good practice, supported by almost every doctor who has offered an opinion.
People with cats are less inclined to go for a walk with their animals, but more inclined to pet the animal as they lay upon their lap. This petting action, experts say, can relieve tension in the user and relieve high blood pressure as well. This extended petting action can lead to all types of good health results.
Keeping pets can be extremely good for your health, providing you interact with them on a regular basis.

TheOmahaChannel.com
10:01 a.m. MT, Mon., Jan. 28, 2008

OMAHA, Neb. – Angie Rempe finds herself staring at the ceiling wherever she goes. It’s a nervous habit, born out of living with bed bugs for eight months. “Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite. I don’t say that anymore,” the Lincoln woman said.

Rempe, her husband and four children moved into a Lincoln apartment in June. She said by July, the family was scratching with unexplainable welts that resembled mosquito bites. An inspection of the mattresses revealed a creepy discovery.

“By the time we found out what they were, the bed bugs had totally coated the seams of the mattresses,” said Rempe.

She now finds bed bugs in the baseboards, closets and in cracks in the ceiling of her apartment.

Bed bugs are flat, brownish bugs that feed off humans. Adult bed bugs are about one-quarter inch in size. They don’t spread disease, but the psychological impact of thinking about these nighttime visitors is unnerving.

“If he falls on me, I’m going to scream,” said Rempe recently, watching bed bugs crawl out of a hole in her textured ceiling.

Bed bugs can live in second-hand furniture, especially in bed frames and mattresses. They lay eggs the size of a pin head, and adult bed bugs can stay dormant in a wall without feeding for up to a year.

“I’ve seen bed bugs on the kids before. My sister stayed here one and had one crawl in her ear,” said Rempe.

According to health experts, the United States has seen an increase in infestations of bed bugs in hotels, apartments and homes in recent years. Experts said pesticides like DDT, that controlled the population of bed bugs in the past, are no longer safe for humans.

Last week, officials in New York, Kentucky and Ohio held emergency meetings to form task forces to educate people about outbreaks of bed bugs plaguing residents in increasing numbers.

New York is dealing with infestations of bed bugs in expensive hotels, with unwitting guests taking the bed bugs home with them, stowing away in luggage or clothing.

Cleanliness does not come into play in an infestation. Bed bugs can be found in low-rent apartments and high-end houses. The only requirement is that bed bugs have something to eat.

“Bed bugs only feed by sucking blood. They’re parasites,” said Barb Ogg, UNL extension educator.

Lincoln property managers and Rempe are at odds over who’s responsible for the infestation of bed bugs. But both are working together to exterminate the pests. Ogg said licensed exterminators must use insecticide every few weeks until inspections no longer reveal evidence of living bed bugs.

Tiny brown spots in patches on the wall indicate droppings from bed bugs, a tell-tale sign of a possible infestation.

“You can’t just come in and spray the baseboards and leave,” Ogg said.

Ogg instructed property managers of Rempe’s apartment to have exterminators drill holes in the ceiling to insert the pesticide, and then caulk the holes and plug up any cracks and crevices where the bed bugs might live.

Rempe said exterminators have completed two treatments in recent weeks and she isn’t seeing as much activity from the bed bugs as she has in the past. She said exterminators also treated the vacant apartments that share walls with her unit.

She’s thrown away most of her furniture, sitting only on lawn chairs or milk crates in her three bedroom apartment.

The family sleeps on the floor, with quilts and blankets that can be laundered weekly. Rempe said anything worth saving she’s stored in the garage, hoping sub-zero temperatures will freeze the pests.

Rempe said when she threw her bedding and upholstered furniture in the dumpster, she cut it up, to prevent anyone from trying to salvage it.

Ogg said if you suspect bed bugs, trap one and take it to an exterminator or extension office. With proper identification, pest control and vigilance you don’t have to let the bed bugs bite.

Experts sais that if you travel, inspect your luggage, wash your clothing and vacuum suitcases. Be cautious about used furniture and mattresses. And thoroughly inspect homes and apartments before moving in.

Because bed bugs aren’t known to spread disease, renters and hotel guests aren’t required to report infestations to health authorities. So many times, the extent of the problem is difficult to determine.

Pest control companies have obvious limitations, because they cannot be used to provide personal protection from the depredations of mosquitoes when one is out and about, or away from one’s home or office – ergo, in areas over which one has little control. But with that said, these firms provide a major service by eliminating a large portion of these pests in places where people congregate. At the same time, a little personal caution can definitely go a long way towards avoiding being bitten by mosquitoes.

Those who are concerned with mosquito control in Atlanta should know that the species of mosquito that pester humans can very often be found in damp, dark places and/or outside areas with medium to significant undergrowth. Mosquitoes breed in places with standing water, which are frequently found in areas hidden from the sun. Secondly, many such species of mosquito prefer to lurk in such dark, dank areas to avoid their predators. So areas such as these should be avoided whenever possible.

However, mosquitoes can and do leave the safety of those areas to search for a blood meal for both personal nourishment and nourishment for their eggs. So mosquito control in Atlanta can take the form of both professional services performed by experts in the industry and personal products such as anti-mosquito creams or sprays. People can avail of such products to prevent getting bitten should they encounter hungry mosquitoes while out and about.

You do not need to use harmful chemical pesticides to keep pests, bugs and insects out of your garden. You can make an all natural pest control solution in your own home. Here are a few methods of making an all natural pest control:

To combat bugs like caterpillars, aphids, etc. add tobacco to water and let it sit for at least 24 hours. Ensure the mixture is the color of weak tea before you spray it. Also ensure that you have checked if your tobacco spray can be used with the family of plants you have grown.

On hardy plants, you can even use a diluted mixture of detergent soap and water to drive away bugs and insects, as the taste of soap is very useful in deterring bugs and insects.

For cabbage worms and such insects, a salt spray can be very useful. Just add 2 teaspoons of salt to a gallon of water, mix and spray.

For many different varieties of bugs, a garlic spray would be perfect. Garlic is also anti fungal and anti bacterial in nature and can help keep your plants healthy. Add 1 bulb of crushed garlic, 1 finely chopped onion, 1 tablespoon of cayenne peppers and one tablespoon of liquid soap. Add all other ingredients and let it sit for an hour before adding the liquid soap. This solution can also be kept refrigerated for a few days at a time.

To prevent more bugs from affecting your plant, you can use a few bugs that are already dead. Just collect a few dead bugs, mix them with water and let it sit for some time before spraying affected plants with it.
