You’ve got cats or dogs, and now you’ve got fleas and ticks. You’ve got kids, too. How do you get rid of the pests without harming the family? ?

These bugs are not only a nuisance, but their bites can cause irritation, serious allergies, and even diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever in people. ??These 6 less-toxic tricks will have your home itch-free in no time.

1 Comb constantly. Groom your cat or dog with a metal pet comb, available at pet stores. Focus your efforts on the neck and tail area. (Bugs like to hang out here because the pet can’t scratch them off as easily.) Keep a bowl of hot soapy water nearby when you’re grooming to drown the captured critters. (Ruthless enemies call for ruthless treatment.)

2 Bathe dogs daily. Until the infestation is under control, wash your dog each day using shampoo or dog soap (insecticide not required). I’s the best way to get an infestation on a larger animal in check. Take the comb into the bath for an extra measure of bug catch-and-kill.

3 Wash bedding weekly. Launder washable pet bedding in hot water and bleach at least weekly to kill pests that may have taken up residence there.

4 Think (and apply) topically. Topical treatments such as fipronil and imidacloprid can be applied to an anima’s skin in small amounts while wearing gloves. From there it spreads over the entire body of the pet and is effective for at least a month. Follow the label safety information closely.

5 Treat carpets, animal bedding, and other non-washables with less-toxic products. Wearing a dust mask and goggles, sprinkle diatomaceous earth (DE) on carpets, upholstered furniture, and pet bedding. (You can blow DE into cracks and crevices, too. Use a hand duster to apply a thin layer.)??DE has little toxicity to humans and animals, but kills pests by absorbing the waxy coating on their bodies, causing dehydration and death. Other good less-toxic choices include borate-based carpet treatments and traps.

6 To prevent future flea infestations, keep your pet indoors, restrict your pet to a regular sleeping space so you can better focus your flea-busting efforts, and use washable pet bedding.

It’s a well known fact that dogs have a pretty good chance of being inflicted with fleas at some point in their lifetime. Some will actually seem like they’re a magnet for the small pests. That being said, there are some things you should know about flea control and what to look out for.

Fleas can typically be seen quickly moving over the dog’s skin and are particularly partial to the base of the dogs tail and behind his ears. Flea droppings look like tiny bits of grit and are especially visible on the dog’s belly.

Although there are a large number of different types of flea prevention products available from your VET I would suggest you to use a natural or “over the counter” flea treatment. A recent ASPCA warning has been issued to dog and cat owners regarding the type of flea and tick treatment currently being used. There have been an alarming number of dogs getting sick and dying! This leads to the entire industry being put under a microscopescrutinized, and rightfully so. Bear in mind that not only are the natural products safe but they usually significantly cheaper as well!

It’s important that you should treat your home and car regularly in order to kill off the larvae or adult fleas. Fleas like heated areas so you need to pay extra attention to those parts of your home such as the carpet beneath the radiators, the living-room and the bedroom. Please remember to treat all pet bedding as well. If you only treat the animal and not its environment then you will be leaving all the eggs to hatch out and re-infect the animal all over again.

Canine fleas are quite indiscriminate and will infest a clean healthy dog just as much as the dirty neglected one. Flea bites can cause extreme irritation to the dog. Some dogs can also become allergic to the flea saliva which is injected into the skin every time the flea bites. As well as the irritation of the flea bite they are are also the intermediate host of the tapeworm.

Ages ago flea infestations were confined to the summer months but these days with more and more homes being centrally heated that is no longer the case. Fleas like warmth and will hatch their eggs in the gap between the skirting board and the carpet, between the floorboards, in the pile of fitted carpets and in the dogs bedding and basket.

After the baby flea eggs hatch the larvae stage can remain dormant for anything up to a year if the temp is not warm enough, before jumping onto the next passing host–perhaps your dog or worse you!–for a meal. Fleas do not live on the dog but simply use him as a source of food. They will live in your home and anywhere where the dog regularly goes, such as the car.

Only by paying close attention to flea control will you be able to ensure that your dog is kept clear of these prolific parasites. One of the best ways to prevent fleas from getting a hold in your home is to regularly use the vacuum cleaner.

If you want to protect your pets from harmful fleas and other such pests, it is important to employ a round-the-clock flea control system that protects them whether they are indoors or outdoors. In the end, it will also be beneficial for your family’s health. Here are some tips that you can use to ensure that your house pets and family is protected.

Proper Grooming of Your Pets

You can purchase a flea comb to use on your cats or dogs daily. This is an important step in your flea control efforts. Aside from regular combing, you must also bathe your animals on a daily basis. Avoid using chemical flea shampoos as it can be harsh o them. You can use a gentle soap and water to kill existing fleas without irritating your pet’s skin.

If you are not sure whether your pet already has fleas but you suspect it, use a fine-toothed flea comb and run through the pet’s body while focusing on the lower back or any area near the tail base.

Create a Trap

Still part of your flea control effort, you can place a dish containing soapy water beneath a night light close to your pet’s sleeping area. Fleas are generally attracted to warm light and you can use the soapy water to trap and drown them. This is suited for controlling and eliminating adult fleas in your pets. Aside from being an inexpensive flea control approach, it is also quite effective in eliminating them. But since fleas present in your pet’s body will most likely not leave, you can still combine this procedure with proper bathing and flea combing to ensure a holistic approach for flea treatment in your pet.

Keep Your Pet’s Environment Clean

Fleas do not choose where they lay eggs, thus you need to properly sanitize your environment – whether indoor or outdoor – to ensure that you do not promote in the spread of their eggs. Focus your cleaning on prone areas such as carpets, curtains, pet beddings, upholstery, crevices, cracks, and other such places in or outside the house. Regularly vacuum and frequently wash those places wherein fleas are most likely to lay eggs.

All of the above flea control methods might require hard work and effort on your part, however it is one of the most effective means to protecting your pet against harmful fleas.

Flea control is an essential part of responsible pet care. Undeniably, fleas are annoying to humans as well as pets for they also carry diseases. Despite its size, they make your pets’ lives miserable.

There are stages in the life cycle of the flea. They undergo a complete metamorphosis and there are four distinct stages, respectively from eggs, larvae, pupae into an adult. At any time, about 570 of the fleas are eggs, 34% are larva, 8% are pupa, and only 1% becomes an adult. Te worst thing is that the life cycle of the flea can be completed in even just in 12 days or take as long as 174 days.

Fleas reproduce quickly. Inevitably, they can lay thousands of eggs on your pet and in your home. Eggs of the fleas are laid on the host or are deposited just on the floor of your houses or grounds in your backyard. It is said that to get rid of them is simply to kill them at all life stages – adult, larva and egg.

Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is the most common veterinary dermatologic condition in the world. It begins with the bite of a flea. Fleas can cause itching due to the direct irritation from their bite. The allergy causes immune system of your pet to produces all sorts of substances which greatly magnify the severity of itching.

Controlling the flea is attainable. There are a lot of different medicines, drops, sprays, or whatever that you can buy in the market to put on your pet for flea control. There are a lot of differences between the various brands but still the best approach to fleas is strategic prevention.

Many of us may think that it is more expensive to take care of a flea infestation but it is usually cheaper than dealing with the impediment to your pet’s health that fleas can bring about.

It is commonly known that heavy infestation of fleas and ticks contribute to death and disease. It is also known that more deaths and sicknesses are caused by fleas and ticks than are caused by flea killing devices. The sad part of it is that no deaths or severe illnesses should ever be attributed to flea collars.

Flea collars and the newer flea control medications can actually prevent deaths and sickness if but a few basic facts are known, and adhered to, by all dog owners.

In a recent poll which questioned a large section of dog owners across the United States, more than 90% believe that their dog’s flea collar merely emitted some kind of protective vapor that was repugnant to fleas and ticks, resulting in the pests dying off, due to the lethal vapor, yet without any repercussions on the dog’s health.

The fact is, the pesticide in any flea collar device doesn’t just seep through the animal’s fur as a “protective vapor”. Rather, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and metabolized by the liver. This has a strong effect on the animal’s entire system. The active ingredient in such devices is usually dimethyl phosphate. Used according to directions, and in proper quantities, this ingredient is fatal to fleas and ticks.

Serious problems can occur when a dog owner simply places such flea killing devices around their dog’s neck without taking the time to read the accompanying directions. Many times, though the directions are read, they simply are not taken seriously, nor are they followed.

Most packages containing flea collars or other similar-type pest-fighting devices usually carry a printed caution on the front: “Do not allow children to play with this collar”.

The purchaser is then invited to read the additional precautions printed on the reverse side of the package. Over 50% of the dog owners polled about their knowledge of flea collars admitted that they either did not read the directions, or if they did, simply did not pay much attention to them.

Be Careful

Flea collars should be buckled securely, but not tightly, around the dog’s neck. A collar buckled too tightly will cause greater levels of the active ingredient to be absorbed into the bloodstream of the animal. This condition usually manifests itself by neck irritation, followed by a loss of hair under the collar.

When first placing a flea collar on a dog, the owner should observe the neck area for the first few days and be alert for signs of irritation. If irritation occurs, the collar should be removed immediately.

Additional precautions on most packages point out that each collar is intended as an insecticide generator and is not to be taken internally by man or animals. One might ask who in his right mind would want to eat a flea collar for breakfast. No “man” in his right mind would, but a dog (especially puppies) might consider such a collar an intriguing chew toy!

You have made the good choice! Reading this article will surely be a benefit to you, hope that you will enjoy it as much as we have enjoyed writing it for you.

There are a broad range of flea killers available on the market. Ranging from herbal remedies that act as flea repellents to toxic chemical bombs configured to quickly purge a home of pests, there is something for everyone. Before you select which flea killers you should use, there are several things that you should keep in mind. <a onClick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=” http://www.fleasreviews.info/Flea-Killers.php “>Click Here</a>

First, not all flea killers are safe for homes with pets or children. While treatments such as Borax soap can be very efficient at killing fleas in carpets, they should not be used if there are small children who play on the carpeting. This is especially important if the children put things in their mouths. This can result in accidental poisoning of the children. Pets may also be prone to licking the carpeting, which can cause minor poisoning. Natural substances, such as Pennyroyal, Citronella and Lemongrass can be used as repellents, and should be set where children and pets cannot easily access them. While they are not as dangerous as other products, ingesting some of the herbs used for flea repelling can be harmful.

Among the most dangerous of flea killers are products such as flea bombs or foggers. These chuck out high amounts of toxic fumes and powder into a room, which kill fleas. These take more or less three hours to set, and roughly 30 minutes to an hour for the room to air out after. There can be anywhere from one to two hours of time involved in prepping a room to make it safe to use a flea bomb in.

One of the safest flea killers is already used in many homes. The flea treatments prescribed by vets often include a flea killing compound. This compound is absolutely safe for your cat or dog, but is deadly to fleas. This helps break the flea life cycle, as a dead flea cannot reproduce.

The harshness of your flea infestation should be the primary factor in the type of flea killers you select. If you and your loved ones are being bit frequently, you should treat the problem aggressively, using flea bombs and other treatments to rapidly lower the flea populations. If you are suffering from infrequent bites, you can use less aggressive means to destroy fleas.

No matter which type of flea killers you end up using, you should make certain that you put your family’s safety first. If you use flea bombs or foggers, make certain that you follow the directions extremely carefully, as they are flammable as well as toxic. <a onClick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=” http://www.fleasreviews.info/Flea-Killers.php “>Click Here</a>

I would like to thank you for visiting and reading this article. The topic has been carefully researched and documented for your benefit.

If you suffer from a flea infestation, there are several unpleasant things you are enduring. Most notably, you will find flea bites becoming common. Flea bites are small bites that break through the surface of the skin, and tend to cause moderate to serious itching. If you are hypersensitive to fleas, a skin rash may develop and the bite itself can linger for several weeks. For pets, fur may fall out as the pet scratches at the bites, as well as the skin being damaged from the constant agitation. <a onClick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=” http://www.fleasreviews.info/Flea-Infestation.php “>Click Here</a>

There are several ways to fight a flea infestation. First, you can treat your pets with products like Advantage and Front Line. These turn your pets into flea killers, as any flea that bites your pet is poisoned and killed. This will take down the number of fleas that can breed in your home.

Once you have made sure your pets are treated, you can fight a flea infestation by using chemicals or by making use of dehumidifiers to prevent the larvae from hatching. Chemicals should not be used in homes with pets, as they can be toxic to animals. Dehumidifiers will greatly scale down the number of larvae that hatch, which helps to limit the infestation. All of these methods should be used while also taking the time to vacuum and keep your home clean. When you vacuum, bags should be disposed of immediately, as the bags can provide excellent homes for larvae to hatch.

A flea infestation can have several consequences beyond you and your animals being bit. Fleas are carriers of diseases, transmitting a disease from one person or animal to another. As the fleas feed on blood, the diseases contained in blood can be transferred as the blood may mix with your own when a flea bites you. As fleas are able to rapidly move from victim to victim, it is critical that any flea infestation is dealt with immediately.

If you have one flea in your home, chances are there are many more. Treat a single occurrence of a bite as serious, so the threat of the infestation growing to massive proportions is removed. <a onClick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(‘/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=” http://www.fleasreviews.info/Flea-Infestation.php “>Click Here</a>

If controlling the flea infestation through use of pet medications and shampoos, you can contact a pest control agency for further assistance. This may be prudent in the case of massive infestations, as the level of discomfort may be too much to tolerate while the fleas are dealt with. If you are in a situation where you are getting a lot of flea bites, you should get outside aid immediately.

If you gave gathered some good information please keep browsing on this site you never know what you might find next.

Gary Le Mon asked:

Laboratory studies of ingredients in seven popular flea and tick control products reveal adverse health effects in all animals tested. The effects of these well known and aggressively marketed products range from convulsions, body tremors and labored breathing to thyroid cancer, brain lesions, and liver and lung tumors. Yet TV commercials with trusty looking veterinarians pitch only the happy side of these products.

Which flea and tick pesticide are you using on your dog and/or cat? If your favorite treatment contains the active ingredient Fipronil, Imidacloprid, Methoprene, Permethrin, Pyriproxyfen or the inert ingredient Butyldydroxytoluene, Butylhydroxanisole, Carbitol, Ethanol, or Polyvinlpyrrplidone, you need to know about the not-so-happy side of these products as well.

If you think your veterinarian or local pet store would never sell you such a sinister poison, think again.

Advantage (Bayer Corporation), Adams Spot-On Flea & Tick Control (Farnam Pet Products), BioSpot Flea & Tick Control (Farnam Pet Products), Defend EXspot Treatment (Schering-Plough Animal Health), Frontline Top Spot (Merial Limited), Frontline Plus (Merial Limited), and Zodiac FleaTrol Spot On (Wellmark International) – all contain one or more of the aforementioned active or inert ingredients.

Toxicology and morbidity findings from these pesticide products were gathered over a decade of laboratory testing by the United States Environmental Protection Agency; Occupational Safety & Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor; Extension Toxicology Network; Journal of Pesticide Reform; Pesticide Action Network North America and other sources, with additional information supplied by Material Safety Data Sheets.

Most testing was performed for the benefit of new product manufacturers in order to qualify for EPA registration. Scientists overdose laboratory animals to determine how much of the product will kill 50% of the test population. Information is then extrapolated and assumptions made that may apply to domestic animals and human beings.

According to laboratory tests, Fipronil (Frontline Top Spot and Frontline Plus) is a neurotoxin and suspected human cancer agent. Fipronil can cause liver toxicity, thyroid cancer, kidney damage, raised cholesterol, lack of coordination, labored breathing, miscarriages and stunted offspring.

Laboratory testing of Imidacloprid (Advantage) on mice, dogs and rats shows this insecticide to be neurotoxic to laboratory animals, also causing a breakdown of coordination, labored breathing, lesions of the thyroid, reduced birth weight, and increased birth defects.

The synthetic broad spectrum pyrethroid insecticide Permethrin (Adams Spot-on Flea & Tick Control; BioSpot Flea & Tick Control; and Defend EXspot Treatment) shows indications of being an endocrine disrupter and the cause of lung cancer and liver tumors in laboratory animals.

Methoprene and Pyriproxyfen (Zodiac FleaTrol Spot On; and BioSpot Flea & Tick Control) are known as insect growth regulators (IGR), both of which restrict the growth of fleas to the juvenile stage where reproduction is not possible. Laboratory testing reveals that Methoprene causes enlarged livers and degeneration of the kidneys.

Unfortunately, few people actually read EPA test results. Fewer still want to hear about the many laboratory test subjects (unwanted dogs and cats) killed during and after the studies in order to determine damage to specific systems and organs. But it only takes a few people with straightforward thinking to bring about change. Are you ready to stop this insanity? There are effective alternatives, as you know.

Today there are totally natural flea and tick remedies – completely harmless to kids, pets and the environment – made from pure botanical essential oils. Some natural products work fairly well, some don’t, and some work much better than the toxic stuff!

The mode of action – the way these natural remedies kill fleas and ticks – is to disrupt the insect’s ability to function by blocking a substance called octopamine. In nature, certain plants have developed a natural defense against bugs. These “octopamine blockers” in plants are extracted as oils and used as active ingredients. Octopamine is to an insect what adrenalin is to a human. When blocked from the system, the insect quickly dies. No muss, no fuss. Nobody gets hurt but the bug.

Syahrul Azlan Idris asked:

Allergic reactions in dogs are hard to control and are usually chronic in nature. This is why the right diagnosis and therapy has to be started early to minimize the allergic reaction. The most common symptom for allergic reaction in dogs is excessive itching, or pruritis. It is the high strung dogs that tend to itch more than placid dogs while chewing, licking and rubbing of the skin are all manifestations of pruritis.

The common areas on the dog’s body that are the hardest hit for pruritis are its face, feet and armpit. However, due to some extent of excessive pruritis, it might cover the whole body of the animal. Scratching is normal for them and sometimes not a sign of any irregularities on their skin. But when tiny blood spots appear, it’s already a sign of an allergic reaction. The reason for this is, flea dirt comprises more of blood and they usually appear as small blood spots in any place that they are left behind.

Basically, there are three types of allergic reactions in dogs where the dog may suffer from one of these reactions or a combination of all three conditions. First is food allergy in where a dog is allergic to ingredients or preservatives found in food like beef, wheat, dairy products which are most common food allergens. In addition, even premium dog foods have a tendency to contain these products.

For some dog owners, the best way to stop allergic reactions is to immediately “haul” their pets off to a pet store or a veterinarian’s clinic. Usually, the people running the establishment would recommend some of their dog food to stop these allergic reactions thinking that this is the best way to stop excessive scratching or biting. However, they have to bear in mind that food allergies are the least cause of allergic problems in dogs.

With flea allergy dermatitis, it is the allergens found in the saliva of flea that bites the dog. The flea inserts a coagulant in the dog through the saliva to prevent the clotting of the dog’s blood, and this is what induces an allergic reaction in dogs.

However, because of the intensive research and never-ending “crusade” to discover a cure for allergic reactions in dogs, many treatments were administered thus diminishing the occurrence of flea allergy dermatitis.

The last type of allergic reactions found in dogs is what they call allergic inhaled dermatitis or atopy, a pre-inclination in the animal to produce IgE antibodies on exposure to an allergen.

Allergic reactions will then be evident when there is a re-exposure to the same allergen. Common causes are usually pollen, grasses, animal wastes or animal dander, molds, mites, house dust and feathers which can be either pass through inhalation or through or in-between the pads of its paws.

An insect bite is something that practically everyone experiences. It usually brings about some minor discomfort, especially in the summer months. Though most people don’t have any problems with insect bites apart from some pain and irritation, there are some people who suffer allergic reactions to insect bites. This allergic reaction to insect bites is called hymenoptera, and to people suffering from it, bites and stings prove to be very dangerous.
