There are numerous reasons why we loathe the fly. This lowly insect is a harbinger of death because of the many diseases it brings. Among others, it brought plagues that wiped out entire populations during the Middle Ages.
Today, this insect continues to terrorize us by spreading cholera, typhus, salmonella, the eggs of tapeworms and roundworms, and other diseases, especially in areas where sanitation is poor.
Despite their size, flies are efficient carriers of various diseases like typhoid fever, amebic dysentery, tuberculosis and tetanus. Such “fly-borne diseases” are spread when flies feed on excrement, sputum, open sores, or putrefying matter.
After a hearty meal, these pests carry germs in their mouth, body spines, and the sticky pads on their feet. Each harmless-looking housefly carries at least two million bacteria. Those that live outside your home carry twice as much.

Houseflies are usually found where humans live and they breed in garbage, animal waste, culled fruits and vegetables, and spilled animal feed. One kilogram of organic waste may contain up to 10,000 flies!
While liquid wastes are on top of the fly’s menu, solid food can be appetizing to them as well. To digest solid food, flies moisten substances by vomiting on them. This nasty habit poses a serious health risk to humans since it allows the transmission of several disease-carrying organisms.
To prevent these filthy pests from invading your home, pay attention to good sanitation. Clean your surroundings regularly, remove or cover garbage, and clean spilled animal feed and manure. These simple steps will help control fly breeding areas.
